The Tejas Mk2, also known as the Medium Weight Fighter (MWF), is one of India's most important indigenous fighter aircraft programmes. However, repeated delays have raised questions about the pace of India's defence aviation projects.

While HAL and DRDO are often blamed for the delays, the reality is more complex. The Tejas Mk2 has faced challenges ranging from expanding operational requirements and procurement delays to industrial limitations and dependence on imported components.

More importantly, every delay affects not only the Tejas Mk2 but also India's future fighter programmes, including the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

Tejas Mk2 Is More Than an Upgraded Tejas Mk1A

A common misconception is that the Tejas Mk2 is simply an upgraded version of the Tejas Mk1A. In reality, it is an almost entirely new aircraft.

Compared to the Mk1A, the Tejas Mk2 features:

  • A more powerful GE F414-INS6 engine.

  • Close-coupled canards for improved manoeuvrability.

  • Greater internal fuel capacity for increased combat range.

  • Advanced avionics and sensor fusion.

  • A larger payload capacity and a wider range of weapons.

These changes transform the aircraft from a lightweight fighter into a true medium-weight multirole platform capable of air superiority, deep strike, and Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) missions.

Why Has the Programme Been Delayed?

Several factors have contributed to the delays.

Expanding Air Force Requirements

Over the years, the Indian Air Force sought greater combat range, higher payload, improved survivability, better sensors, and the ability to integrate a wider range of weapons.

While these requirements improve the aircraft's capability, they also require redesigns, additional testing, software updates, and fresh certification, increasing both development time and cost.

Procurement Delays

India's defence procurement process has often struggled to keep pace with long-term development programmes.

Delayed approvals, inconsistent acquisition plans, and funding uncertainties have slowed investments in manufacturing infrastructure and the domestic aerospace supply chain.

Industrial and Development Challenges

Development agencies such as ADA and DRDO have occasionally set ambitious timelines that proved difficult to achieve.

Meanwhile, HAL continues to expand its production capacity while managing multiple aircraft programmes simultaneously, including the Tejas Mk1A, Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), and Light Utility Helicopter (LUH).

In addition, reliance on imported engines such as the GE F414 introduces external dependencies that can affect programme schedules.

Why the Delay Matters

The impact of the Tejas Mk2 delay extends well beyond a single fighter aircraft.

Every year of delay pushes back the development and production experience needed for future programmes like the AMCA and the Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF).

These programmes rely on the expertise gained through developing complex fighter aircraft, including systems integration, advanced manufacturing, software development, and large-scale production.

China's Fighter Production Is Moving Faster

While India continues developing the Tejas Mk2, China is rapidly expanding its combat aviation capabilities.

Open-source assessments indicate that the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has already fielded around 500 J-20 stealth fighters, with production reportedly continuing at a high rate. China has also publicly showcased next-generation aircraft concepts that are widely believed to support its sixth-generation fighter programme.

This growing production capacity highlights the widening gap between India's development timelines and China's manufacturing pace.

By the time the AMCA enters service in the mid-2030s, China could possess an even larger fleet of fifth-generation fighters while advancing sixth-generation capabilities.

Lessons for India's Aerospace Industry

The Tejas Mk2 delay cannot be attributed to a single organisation.

The Indian Air Force expanded the aircraft's operational requirements to meet evolving threats. Procurement processes struggled to provide consistent long-term support. Development agencies underestimated the complexity of building a significantly more capable fighter, while HAL continues to strengthen its industrial capacity. Dependence on foreign suppliers has added further uncertainty to programme timelines.

Looking Ahead

The Tejas Mk2 remains a crucial programme for India's air power. Once inducted, it will bridge the gap between the Tejas Mk1A and the future AMCA while significantly enhancing the Indian Air Force's combat capability.

However, the programme is also a test of India's aerospace ecosystem. The lessons learned from the Tejas Mk2 must translate into faster decision-making, stronger industrial capacity, better programme management, and more predictable procurement.

In modern military aviation, success is measured not only by designing advanced aircraft but also by delivering them on time and producing them at scale. As regional competitors continue to modernise their air forces, accelerating indigenous fighter development will be essential to maintaining India's long-term air power advantage.
