Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed the final contract for the Aravalli helicopter engine, marking a significant step forward in India’s effort to develop a new-generation indigenous propulsion capability.

The Aravalli is being jointly developed through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd., the 50.5:50 joint venture between HAL and Safran. The engine is planned in the 3,500–4,000 shaft horsepower (shp) class and is intended primarily for HAL’s 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval derivative, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).

From Shakti to Aravalli

The HAL–Safran relationship in helicopter propulsion is not new. The companies previously worked together on the Artouste engines for the Cheetah and Chetak fleets and later on the Shakti engine, which powers platforms including the Dhruv, LCH and LUH.

Aravalli, however, represents a more ambitious level of cooperation. Rather than simply manufacturing an existing foreign design, HAL and Safran are jointly undertaking the engine’s design, development, certification and production.

The dedicated SAFHAL joint venture was established in 2023 to manage this programme and future helicopter-engine opportunities.

Why Aravalli Matters

The IMRH is expected to become India’s next-generation medium-lift military helicopter, while the DBMRH is being developed for naval operations. Both platforms require a powerful and reliable turboshaft engine capable of delivering performance across demanding operating environments.

For India, the significance of Aravalli extends beyond the IMRH itself. High-power aero-engine technology remains one of the most challenging areas of aerospace development, particularly in areas such as hot-section technology, turbine materials, compressors, combustion, engine controls and durability.

The joint-development model allows India to leverage Safran’s established propulsion expertise while expanding HAL’s capabilities in advanced engine design and manufacturing.

Beyond IMRH

The Aravalli could eventually find applications beyond military helicopters. HAL and Safran have indicated potential opportunities in offshore, utility and VVIP transport applications.

A broader user base could also help establish a larger Indian ecosystem for engine manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul.

A Milestone, Not the Finish Line

The signing of the final contract is an important programme milestone, but the Aravalli still has to progress through detailed development, testing and certification before it can enter operational service.

If successfully executed, however, the programme could give India a much stronger foothold in high-power turboshaft technology and provide the IMRH and DBMRH with an engine developed specifically around their requirements.

More importantly, Aravalli could become a foundation for India's future generation of indigenous helicopter propulsion systems.
