100 Su-57s for the Indian Air Force? Is It Really a Stopgap Before the AMCA?
Reports suggest that the IAF and the MoD have been discussing the acquisition of 80–100 Su-57 fifth-generation fighters as an interim solution until the AMCA enters service. But does the proposal make strategic sense? This analysis examines the reported discussions, the Defence Secretary's recent statement ruling out Su-57 procurement, the aircraft's operational record, and whether investing in another imported fighter could complicate India's long-term indigenous aerospace ambitions.

Recent reports indicate that the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) have explored the possibility of acquiring 80–100 Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft as an interim capability until the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) enters service. If such a proposal were to materialise, it would represent one of the largest fighter procurements in India's history. However, beyond the headlines lies a far more consequential strategic debate. The central question is not whether the Su-57 is a capable aircraft, but whether importing another fifth-generation platform aligns with India's long-term airpower objectives or risks diverting resources from the indigenous aerospace ecosystem that India has spent decades building.
It is equally important to distinguish between capability assessments and procurement decisions. Defence establishments routinely evaluate multiple options to address future operational requirements without those discussions necessarily translating into acquisition programmes. As of now, there is no Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), Request for Proposal (RFP), or Cabinet approval for the Su-57. The more relevant issue, therefore, is whether such an aircraft would represent the most effective solution to India's evolving strategic challenges.
The Capability Gap Driving the Discussion
The renewed debate surrounding the Su-57 stems from the IAF's increasingly complex operational environment. Squadron strength continues to remain below the authorised level of 42 squadrons, while legacy MiG-21 aircraft have retired and older Jaguar and Mirage-2000 fleets will eventually require replacement. At the same time, indigenous programmes such as the Tejas Mk2 and the AMCA remain several years away from operational induction due to the inherent complexity of advanced combat aircraft development.
Externally, the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is rapidly expanding its inventory of fifth-generation J-20 stealth fighters, supported by modern airborne early warning platforms, integrated air defence systems and long-range precision weapons. This growing capability gap has intensified discussions on whether the IAF requires an interim fifth-generation aircraft to maintain technological parity until indigenous platforms become operational.
Assessing the Su-57 as a Fifth-Generation Fighter
The Sukhoi Su-57 represents a different design philosophy from many Western stealth aircraft. Rather than prioritising stealth above all else, the aircraft seeks to balance low observability with exceptional aerodynamic performance, high manoeuvrability and long-range air combat capability. It incorporates the N036 Byelka AESA radar, an integrated sensor suite, infrared search and track (IRST), advanced electronic warfare systems, supercruise capability and thrust-vectoring engines designed to provide superior agility in both beyond-visual-range and within-visual-range engagements.
However, the aircraft's stealth characteristics remain a subject of considerable debate among defence analysts. Features such as conventional engine nozzles, partially exposed compressor faces and design compromises intended to preserve aerodynamic performance have raised questions regarding its radar cross-section management and infrared signature. While these characteristics do not negate the Su-57's operational effectiveness, they have led many analysts to question whether it delivers the same degree of low observability typically associated with stealth-first designs.
Operational Experience and Procurement Considerations
Russia has employed the Su-57 during the conflict in Ukraine, but publicly available information indicates that its operations have largely been conducted from stand-off ranges using long-range precision weapons rather than sustained penetration of heavily defended airspace. Consequently, there remains limited independently verifiable evidence regarding the aircraft's performance against modern integrated air defence networks under high-threat conditions.
For a procurement programme involving up to 100 aircraft, this limited operational data naturally becomes an important consideration. Defence acquisitions of this scale require confidence not only in technical specifications but also in demonstrated combat effectiveness across a broad range of operational scenarios.
Fleet Commonality and Long-Term Sustainability
Beyond the aircraft itself, introducing another fighter platform would significantly increase the complexity of the IAF's force structure. The service already operates multiple combat aircraft types, each requiring dedicated maintenance infrastructure, specialised pilot training, logistics chains, depot-level maintenance facilities and separate weapons integration programmes.
Modern air forces increasingly emphasise fleet commonality to reduce life-cycle costs, simplify sustainment and improve operational availability. Adding another unique fifth-generation platform would inevitably increase long-term operating costs while placing additional pressure on maintenance and logistics systems that are already managing a diverse combat fleet.
Strategic Opportunity Cost
The debate extends well beyond procurement expenditure. Acquiring 80–100 imported fifth-generation fighters would require a substantial financial commitment that could otherwise support critical indigenous programmes. Investments in the AMCA, domestic aero-engine development, advanced AESA radar technologies, electronic warfare systems and India's broader aerospace industrial base all compete for finite defence resources.
From a strategic perspective, every major acquisition represents a prioritisation decision. While imported platforms may provide immediate capability, indigenous programmes generate long-term technological self-reliance, industrial capacity and sovereign control over future combat aircraft development.
The Super Sukhoi Alternative
An alternative approach already under consideration is the Super Sukhoi programme, which aims to comprehensively modernise the existing Su-30MKI fleet. Planned upgrades include indigenous AESA radar, modern mission computers, advanced electronic warfare suites, improved cockpit architecture and integration of next-generation Indian air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons.
Leveraging an existing platform allows the IAF to achieve a substantial increase in combat capability while avoiding the logistical burden associated with introducing an entirely new aircraft type. More importantly, it preserves financial and industrial resources that can continue supporting the AMCA programme, which remains India's long-term fifth-generation fighter objective.
Strategic Assessment
The discussion surrounding the Su-57 should not be viewed solely through the lens of aircraft performance. Rather, it reflects the broader challenge of balancing immediate operational requirements with long-term strategic priorities. The IAF unquestionably requires enhanced combat capability as regional airpower competition intensifies, but the solution must also strengthen India's indigenous aerospace ecosystem rather than undermine it.
Evaluating the Su-57 is entirely consistent with prudent military planning. However, any decision to induct a fleet of 80–100 imported fifth-generation fighters would require policymakers to carefully weigh short-term operational gains against long-term industrial, financial and technological consequences. Ultimately, India's future air superiority will depend not only on acquiring advanced aircraft, but on successfully developing the indigenous technological and industrial capabilities needed to sustain that advantage for decades to come.
